Light is perhaps one of the most important elements in a home due to it directly relating to the mood you wish to set for yourself and others. Natural lighting is known to create an innate sense of warmth, as opposed to harsh, cold lighting. There's a reason we like candles in an entryway or bathroom.
Holocene's No.2 Oil Lamp brings a nostalgic twist on the calming flicker of a flame—brightening up any corner (or corners) of your home with subversive sophistication. With its moveable reflective shields that hug the base, this light is an elegant interpretation of the oil lamp, which allows the owner to have an interactive relationship to the piece. Made from both matte and shiny brass, it also features an off-center wick, which welcomes more moments of play between shadow, light and its surroundings.
Designed by David Chipperfield for Wästberg Lighting, a Swedish company founded in 2008.
Wästberg is dedicated to honoring the evolution of light and how we approach lighting design in the modern world.
"Electric light has been around for little more than a century – a blink of an eye in comparison with human evolution. Today, we find ourselves trying to tame our primitive needs to meet the demands of a modern, high-tech world, where light has more or less become a world of electronics. In our overly-lit spaces – created under the mistaken notion that more light equals greater productivity – we feel exposed, small, with nowhere to go.
We believe in creating modern-day fires. Light should shine for us, not on us."
